How to measure foot length correctly
Place a piece of paper on a hard floor. Have your child stand on it with their heel against a wall.
Mark the tip of the longest toe with a pencil (usually the big toe or second toe).
Measure from the wall to the mark in millimetres.
Measure both feet — use the longer measurement.
Measure in the afternoon when feet are slightly larger.

Shoe Fit Tips
👍
Allow 10–15 mm growing room
There should be about a thumb's width (10–15 mm) between the longest toe and the end of the shoe.
⏰
Shop in the afternoon
Feet naturally swell slightly during the day. Measuring and fitting shoes in the afternoon gives a more accurate result.
🧦
Wear the right socks
Bring the socks your child will usually wear — thin or thick socks can make a noticeable difference to fit.
📐
Width matters too
If the shoe fits for length but is too narrow, try a wide-fit style. Kids' feet come in different widths and a too-narrow shoe can cause pain.
🔄
Remeasure every 3 months
Young children's feet can grow a full size in 3–4 months. Check regularly, especially if you notice redness or your child complains of sore feet.
🛍️
Brand sizes can vary
Size charts are a guide. Different shoe brands cut differently — always try shoes on if possible and don't rely on size alone.
Australian children's shoe sizes follow the same numbering system as UK sizes, which runs from 0 (newborn) through to 13, then restarts at 1 for older kids (sometimes called "youth" or "big kids" sizes). US children's sizes run one size higher than AU/UK. EU sizes are based on the Paris point system (each size = 2/3 cm of foot length). This calculator uses your child's foot length in millimetres to find the closest match across all four sizing systems. Because shoe sizing varies slightly between brands and styles, always allow 10–15 mm of growing room and check the fit when possible. Last updated May 2026.
Yes — Australian and UK children's shoe sizes use the same numbering system. A size 5 AU is the same as a size 5 UK. US children's sizes run one number higher: an AU/UK 5 equals a US 6.
The AU/UK children's system runs from 0 to 13 for small kids, then starts again at 1 for older children (sometimes called "big kids" or "youth" sizes). These are different from toddler size 1. Most shoe retailers label them clearly as "Kids 1–7" or "Youth" to avoid confusion.
A gap of 10–15 mm (about a thumb's width) between the tip of the longest toe and the end of the shoe is ideal. Less than 10 mm is too tight; more than 15 mm and the shoe may slip at the heel and cause trips. Check the fit when the child is standing and bearing weight.
For children under 3, measure every 6–8 weeks. For ages 3–6, every 8–10 weeks. Older children grow more slowly so every 3–4 months is usually enough. Also re-measure whenever your child complains of sore feet, if you notice redness on the toes, or if they're growing through a growth spurt.
Shoe sizing standards are guidelines, not strict requirements. Each brand creates its own lasts (the foot-shaped moulds shoes are built on), so a size 5 from one brand may fit differently than a size 5 from another. Always measure foot length in mm for the most reliable starting point, then check the fit in-store when possible.
